Identification and Background ¶
The GEN 1 is the basic wheelchair designed for use in the rugged terrain of rural and under-resourced areas. Using parts already in existence, such as a resin lawn chair and durable mountain bike tires, the GEN 1 is a low cost but effective wheelchair.
With nearly 700,000 wheelchairs shipped to date, the GEN 1 can be found all over the world from Haiti to Fiji. The GEN 1 ships complete with its distinguishable white resin lawn chair, a custom steel frame, durable mountain bike tires, thick 8-inch castor wheels, and all the necessary tools to properly assemble the wheelchair.
Soon after, the GEN 1 was complemented by Free Wheelchair Mission's newest design, the GEN 2. With adjustable seating and customizable footrests, the GEN 2 is particularly well suited for children and people with special medical needs.
