Background
Announced September 9th, 2026 alongside the iPhone Duo, AirPods 5 are as the name suggests: they're Apple's 5th generation of their ever-popular AirPods wireless in-ear headphones; the direct successor to AirPods 4. Two models were launched side-by-side:
- AirPods 5: The basic model, with no wireless charging case
- AirPods 5 (Wireless Charging Case): The more premium model with wireless charging and swipe gesture volume control
AirPods 5 are priced at $129 for the basic model and $149 for the wireless charging model.
Identification
The AirPods 5 can be identified by their short, squat case design, hinged on the long edge. The charging LED, when off, is hidden in the plastic case. It has a USB-C port instead of a Lightning port. The headphones themselves are all plastic, and don't use silicone tips like AirPods Pro.
The model number is printed inside the charging case's lid.
