Background:
The FreeStyle Navigator II is an automatic blood glucose monitoring system intended for home-use. Continuous blood glucose monitors (CGMs) are used by individuals who treat their diabetes with insulin. It is paired with a transmitter worn on the user's arm to display their blood glucose reading on the receiver after use. CGMs provide an automatic reading for the user instead of regularly monitoring glucose levels by using a drop of blood from a finger. The device was released in April 2013 and is the successor to the Abbott FreeStyle Navigator CGM.
In comparison to it's predecessor the Abbott FreeStyle Navigator CGM, the FreeStyle Navigator II has a more accurate sensor, smaller transmitter, longer range and more flexible reports that are easier to use. Some users dislike the device's outdated look and claim the adhesive for the worn transmitter isn't strong enough for physical activity.
The device provides a new reading every minute, has a color screen receiver, 30m transmitter range and a 5 day sensor life span. The FreeStyle Navigator II allows users to set a target range of their blood glucose levels and includes Trend Arrows to display whether levels are stable, falling/rising or quickly falling/rising.
Abbott Diabetes Care announced in August 2011 they would permanently discontinue FreeStyle Navigator products in the United States. After this announcement, ADC (Abbott Diabetes Care) continued releasing products all around Europe and the Middle East. When the FreeStyle Navigator II was released in April 2013 it was only available to users in the UK, Scandinavia, Holland and Israel.
In February 2014 a recall was made on Abbott Diabetes Care CGMs due to inaccurate test results. When the glucose monitors were paired with any FreeStyle test strip the device would produce falsely low glucose readings. This caused users to mismanage their diabetes which could cause hyperglycemia.
