Porsche Boxster (987.1) Engine Specifications
The 987 generation utilized two primary engine displacements during its production run, both featuring a mid-mounted, naturally aspirated flat-six configuration with a water-cooled block and four valves per cylinder.
2.7L Base Engine (M97.20)
- Architecture: 2687cc Boxer-6 with an aluminum block and heads.
- Output:
- 2005–2006: 240 hp at 6,400 rpm / 199 lb-ft of torque.
- 2007–2008: Updated to 245 hp at 6,500 rpm / 201 lb-ft of torque via revised engine management and VarioCam Plus.
- Compression Ratio: 11.3:1.
- Performance: 0–60 mph in approximately 5.9 seconds with a top track speed of 160 mph.
3.2L & 3.4L Boxster S Engines
- 3.2L (M96.26) - 2005–2006:
- Output: 280 hp at 6,200 rpm / 236 lb-ft of torque.
- Note: This was the final evolution of the 3.2L displacement before the mid-cycle upgrade.
- 3.4L (M97.21) - 2007–2008:
- Output: 295 hp at 6,250 rpm / 251 lb-ft of torque.
- Engineering: This engine was essentially shared with the Cayman S, utilizing a larger bore and the VarioCam Plus system to provide a flatter torque curve across the rev range.
- Performance (3.4L): 0–60 mph in 5.1 seconds with a top track speed of 169 mph.
Critical Technical Features
- VarioCam Plus: Starting in 2007, both the 2.7L and 3.4L engines utilized this system to adjust intake camshaft timing and switch between two different lift profiles. This optimized the engine for fuel economy at low speeds and maximum volumetric efficiency at high RPMs.
- Dry Sump Lubrication: The engines used an "integrated dry sump" system. While it does not utilize a separate external oil tank like the 911 GT3, it employs multiple scavenge pumps within the crankcase to ensure consistent oil pressure during sustained high-G cornering.
- Fuel Injection: These engines utilized Bosch Motronic ME7.8 multi-point electronic fuel injection. This was the final generation of Boxster engines to use Port Fuel Injection before the transition to Direct Fuel Injection (DFI) in the 987.2 models.
