Background and Identification
The R170 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is the first generation of the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class line of compact luxury roadsters. The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class was released in 1996 by Mercedes-Benz in the sports car and compact grand tourer classes. The R170 model was sold between 1996 and 2004.
The name SLK stands for Mercedes-Benz’s design mission to produce a sportlich (sporty), leicht (light), and kurz (compact) roadster vehicle. The SLK vehicles were based on a shortened platform of the W202 Mercedes C-Class. The R170 line was replaced by the Mercedes R171 SLK-Class in 2004.
The R170 Mercedes SLK includes power seats, power windows, power seating, dual-zone climate control, alloy wheels, and dimmable interior mirrors. The vehicles include safety features like front and side driver and passenger airbags, anti-lock brakes, and electronic stability control. R170 models could be optioned with the AMG body design package that included body-color side skirts, chromed tailpipes, and 17-inch AMG alloy wheels. On SLK 230 Kompressor models, wider wheels were available.
The R170 Mercedes SLK was on Car and Driver’s 1997 Ten Best list and was named the ‘North American Car of the Year’ for the same year.
Mercedes-Benz vehicles can be identified by the Mercedes-Benz emblem, which is usually silver and depicts a three-pointed star inside of a circle. The line name, in this case, “SLK” plus a three-digit number is generally included on the left side of the vehicle’s rear end.
