Shuts off, when plugged in says there is no battery

Iphone intermittently works and then shuts off. When plugged in, it says there is no battery and then says it needs to be connected to iTunes to be configured. Then it will work for a day or two and repeat

sounds like a bad battery...iPhone 4 Battery Replacement. It's a simple and cheap repair that anyone could do. Go easy on the battery connector it's easy to use too much force and pull the connector from the board.
