Screen won't register anything on keyboard at certain angles

I got the surface book 1 several years ago. It worked fine for about 2 months, then I had a problem where it shut down mid-reattach with the keyboard. Now it won't register anything about the keyboard or touchpad, or read anything through the usb ports unless the screen is at a specific angle with the keyboard. It also makes "popping" or "cracking" noises when you move the screen through the full range of its motion. I really need help with this as it makes the computer basically unusable with the keyboard attached, as it constantly cuts in and out of usability.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Hi @therocker9987,

Your problem maybe a faulty connection between the screen and the keyboard. It can come from particles in the hinge (explaining the crackling noise when moving).

You can access and clean the hinge by opening the keyboard assembly, which is much simpler and less dangerous than the opening of the screen.

If cleaning isn't enough, with the hinge disassembled, I think you can find spare connectors on the web and change the faulty one with a new one and re-assemble the hinge.

You can use this tutorial to open your keyboard. You may have to remove the battery and all the component to access the screws of the hinge (2 groups of 3 black screws + connector screws, if I remember well).

With the hinge separated, you can disassemble each part one one by and remove the surface connector from the hinge. You can clean it with isopropylic alcohol, contact cleaner, and remove all the dust particles from the hinge part. I advise you to make a visual inspection of the connector which is composed of dozens of small cables taped together. It can be very weak and sensible to puncturing ...

Make one more try with the clean connector, if it doesn't work, think about buying a new one.

Hope it helps :/
