Replaced battery. Phone won't start

My iPhone 3GS was crashing and black lines were on the screen. This kept repeating and go worce so I bout a new battery and it said it was charging when your batterys dead. I left it on the charger for 2 hours and showed the same thing I don't know what to do. Help!!!
