water damage/lights up when charged but cant see display

during a football practice in the fall of 2011 there was a rain storm and my iphone 3gs was in my bag and became what i thought was water damaged and wouldn't work. i tried the rice method for a long time but still no results. when i plug the phone in to charge it will illuminate to a darker screen but the diplay does not work. i cant see anyhting on the screen besides the evident change in the darkness of the screen. also the white sticker to detect water damage are still white. i opened up the phone and the 1,2,and 3 tabs seem to have some corrosion on them. can i fix this problem?

mitch, if you can see your icon's but they are very dim, that means your backlight is not working. The backlight itself is in the LCD. Replace it and see what you get. If the LCD is still showing you the same thing, then you will have to take a look at logic board backlight coil 6R8 and see if that is short circuited. It's pretty small and will require soldering. There are some good videos right here and here as well Hope this helps, good luck.

what if i cant see any icons? when i plug the phone in to charge i can tell that it is responding because the screen turns darker and there is an outline to the phone like it is working but i cant see icons

mitch, what exactly do you mean by "there is an outline to the phone"? I took it as a missing backlight but may be wrong. Try to follow this guide Repairing iPhone Liquid Damage It was written for a 3G but still applies to your phone as well. It is of course entirely possible that you have corrosion issues as well. After you cleaned it, try a hard reset and see what you get. I still think that even after cleaning and restore my first step would be to check/change the LCD.

the outline is hard to explain there is no background visible the iphone lights up when i charge but it is black still and there is corrosion on the 1 2 and 3 cable and some on the logic board which i am going to clean. how do i go about cleaning the 1 2 and 3 cable though
