Won't sleep when lid is closed

Hi everyone,

When the lid is closed on this MacBook, the laptop doesn't go into sleep mode. This happens whether it is plugged into the charger or not. macOS has been clean installed and that has not helped.

I believe that it is very unlikely to be software related at all, so I would like to know what parts of the MacBook can cause this. I assume there is some sort of H.A.L.L effect sensor in the top case, but would replacing the top case resolve this issue? (the battery needs to be replaced too so it isn't too bad to do this at the same time.

Thanks, Philip

Yes your system uses a Hall sensor with a magnet imbedded in the displays lid. The Hall sensor is hidden in the Right side speaker MacBook Pro 15" Retina (Late 2016-2017) Right Speaker

Replacing it should resolve things. But to be sure use a rare earth magnet sliding it along the face area of the speaker area the display should react if not that’s your problem.
