1993 Honda Accord stalls & won't accelerate sometimes

My 1993 Honda Accord has around 205k miles. Recently it started having trouble turning on. I would drive it for a while then go into the store really quick. When I come out to turn it back on it won't start. I would have to wait a few minutes for it to turn on finally. Once, it completely turned off at a stop sign while I was driving.

I went to the mechanic and they said it was the main relay. Recently it wouldn't accelerate after turning on. I still haven't gotten the main relay replaced, but is that the problem? Can a bad main relay cause the car not to accelerate?

Thank you

@notbroken got any ideas on this one? I know relays can cause some of these problems but I don't know of any relay that can cause all.of this. And I don't know of a relay that will stop acceleration. That sounds more like a throttle issue

Not enough info was given (throttle body or EFI, fuel pressure, etc). Repair shops can be hit or miss; engine diagnosis with profits made whether or not repairs correct a problem. Car repairs are complicated and better asked in car forums unless an experienced Honda Accord member is here and knows exactly what's wrong. As already suggested, parts swapping from guessing can be expensive without proof of where the problem lies.

I suggest either more info (which can become complicated) or searching for Honda Accord forums where owners and maybe Honda techs may have more info to help.

Engine problems are usually either fuel or ignition related. A visual spark test and fuel pressure gauge to measure pressure during startup are in a list of questions I ask as electronic fuel injection can be complicated to most diyers unfamiliar with EFI systems.

I replaced the main relay and the issue was fixed. Turns out the mechanic was right.

could be a throttle body/ sensor, or it could be the fuel pump, sounds like its getting over heated and not sending fuel. does it always start on a cold start? and only act up when hot?

@xeeter Yes it turns on fine in the morning. It has trouble turning on when I've been driving it for a while.

sounds fuel related to me, but could be an 02 sensor, id start with 02 sensor, *cheaper* if no fix, start looking at the fuel system.
