Hi,

What is the full model number of the laptop as shown on the information label on the bottom?

According to the specifications the laptop supports up to 16GB of memory, but it may depend on the exact U840 model variant as some have 2GB of onboard memory and only 1 memory slot, whereas others have no onboard memory but have 2 slots.

If there is only 1 memory slot in the laptop the maximum is 10GB (2GB onboard + 8GB removable).

For models which have 2 slots, the maximum is 16GB (2 x 8GB).

Use this supplier’s selection tool to find your exact model and find out how much memory it supports i.e. look for Dynabook Toshiba > Satellite U800 series > U840 (find your exact model variant in the list)

If I had to take an educated guess, "low end" SKUs (Pentium, i3) probably are partially onboard, and the i5/i7 versions have 2 slots. That's usually how this two-tiered (read: still BS. Put 2 RAM slots on all of the boards FFS) mess works.
