My MacBook Pro overheated, and when it restarted the battery was dead.

Does anyone know where to look first? The nearest Apple store is several hours away, so I'd like to fix this one myself.

What I know: I was transcoding a movie for my iPod while on battery power. The battery is some cheap knock-off that the guy who sold me this laptop purchased, NOT a genuine Apple battery. The macbook shut off suddenly, and didn't turn on until I plugged it into the wall. It sees the battery, but it won't charge or run off the battery.

Did I blow a capacitor on the logic board, or did I just kill the worthless battery? I don't have another battery to test, so any other way of resetting the battery or even pinouts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Okay, so I took the case off and the magsafe board looks fine. I'll poke around there for a bit and then take a crack at the battery.

Hi Mike, try reseting the PRAM and VRAM, same things happened to me, as soon as i disconnected the magsafe, it shut down.

Do you have an X in the menu bar battery icon ?

To reset :

- turn off your mac

- locate P R Command and Control (alt)

- turn on the mac and hold P+R+Cmd+alt until your hear the second starting chime

- release and check the battery

Hope it will work

Ben: I did reset the SMC and PRAM, but it didn't fix it. I don't have an X in the menu bar, and system profiler shows the battery is still there but the amperage is 0. I suspect that I burned out something on the DC in board, I'm just looking for alternates to disassembling the laptop to check.

Has anyone ever killed the DC in board by running a high current load while on battery power?

Thanks anyway, though.
