Sony UBP X800 - Won't power on

Hi,

I’ve been trying to fix this device for some time and got some very helpful comments on another platform but that’s dried up so hoping I can get some pointers re where to go next :)

TLTR - I’ve pretty much eliminated the power module as the source of the problem as power seems to be leaving the board via 2 power cables to the mainboard.

I’m sure now its something on the motherboard but not sure what to check. Long shot I know, but if anyone has some ideas I can try, that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

@ragnarmop if you already ruled out the PSU we need to see the rest of the boards and we would need to know what you have already checked. That way we do not repeat unnecessary steps.

Hi there

I also have a completely dead UBP-X800. Just died while using the wifi. If you have a solution yet, PLEASE let us know, it would be appreciated.

Gonna close this down now as I am pretty certain we can’t go any further. I am 98% certain that the fault is on the logic board and that is not a part I can either fix or replace as Sony no longer supply them. Oldturkey03, many thanks for your help! Stay well :)

Just to say my UBP x700 has same problem. A repair centre has told me it’s the board and £200 to repair so that’s the end of that.

Update 07/29/2021

@ragnarmop you are giving up to early :-) I finally got my hands on the complete service manual. Use that to complete the troubleshooting. ==>>Slide 1<<==

The schematic is a bit weird to look at. It is in layers and I am not sure how to open the individual layers in a PDF and have not had time to play around with it. It’s getting a bit crazy at work….again.

Don’t give up yet!

Hi!

Thank you for the flowchart. I’ll crack on and see what I find.

Hi,

I should have mentioned that I’d bought a new power board and tried that but the player did not respond.

With the old board in place, I got the following result when testing the IC101: Testing voltage between pins 5 and 1 = 213V… Will keep testing.

Testing continues :)

Check power throughput from the board to CN202

With the device connect to mains, I checked pins 6 and 4 and there is no power getting to these pins. Its odd, When I tried the new board, it also did not return the player to life which suggests there’s something downstream perhaps? But why would there be no voltage showing on those pins if the problem was further down…… (thinking out loud here :) ) I have very little experience with electronics so everything is a first for me.

@ragnarmop did you check IC401 pin 4 and did you get 1.8V?

by

I found what I think you are referring to on the MB. Testing now.... I get 000 Volts at pin 4

I don't think they intended it to be fixed at all, even the service manual does not mention anything about it.

I think the best and easiest way is to use an external power supply or a power brick, doesn't matter, as long as it's 12V and 2A and above, this should do the job.
