Did I just spend $139 on a replacement battery that won't charge?

So I just went through the lengthy process or replacing my swollen MacBookPro 15 batteries and everything looked great. Powered it back up and it recognized the new battery so all was good. In accordance with iFixit’s instructions I used it down to 10% (it was originally 26% on installation) without the power supply and then plugged in the PSU. After a restart an hour later I’m getting the X in the battery menubar and it’s telling me my new battery needs servicing - it’s at 1% ! Has anyone experienced this? Did I get a duff battery? Do I need to reset the system somehow? How do I contact iFixit regarding this? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

iFixit replied offering to send out a new battery however, after 6 hours of the brand new battery reading 1% charge, and telling me it needed servicing… and several SMB resets which did nothing… it only sprang to life after I upgraded the OS (by chance) from MacOS 11.2 to 11.2.1. It rebooted at 46% charge and then charged up fine. All good.
