Mac Mini Won't Boot After RAM Upgrade

Hello to iFixit community.

I got a new Mac Mini 2020 (i7, 8GB RAM, 2TB Storage) and tried to upgrade the RAM to max it out.

First I tried HyperX Impact DDR4 2666 MHz 32GB x2, but the Mac won’t boot. The light turned on but nothing on the screen. After a short while the fan suddenly went up to make a big noise very shortly, and then the noise and the light went out.

I then tried Corsair DDR4 2666 MHz 32GB x2, still the same problem.

I tried these SO-DIMMs in another laptop and turned out the SO-DIMMs themselves were all fine.

But if I put the original 4GB x2 back into the system, the Mac can boot and enter the system without any problems at all.

Does anyone have any thought on this issue?

Thank you a lot!

All I can tell you is OWC offers a memory upgrade for this system: OWC Memory Upgrades: For Mac mini (2018 - Current) So I would see if theirs work.

As I don’t know the Apple SO-DIMM specs (Apple doesn’t offer it in their mac Mini guide either) there is no official listing from Apple. It might be the higher clocked CPU’s need a faster SO-DIMM or it could be some other variable is important.

Maybe someone with the high end model can tell us what Apple uses.
