Hi,

Some things to try:

a)Try resetting the BIOS and check if this resolves the problem.

Switch off and disconnect the power to the desktop and then gently remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard. Remember which way it was installed for when you go to reinsert it. Usually it is +ve on top

Press and hold the desktop’s Power On button for 30 seconds to drain any residual power from the motherboard. This will reset the BIOS to its’ default settings so if you have any particular user defined settings in BIOS you will have to reset them if the PC starts OK.

Also while the CMOS battery is out check the voltage of the battery. It should be 3V DC. If it is <2.6V DC replace it.

Reinsert the CMOS battery into the motherboard, reconnect the power to the desktop and try to start the desktop.

Hopefully it will be good to go.

Here’s an image of the motherboard showing where the CMOS battery is located.

b) Connect a PC system speaker to the motherboard and check if there are any beep error codes when trying to start the desktop.

Here’s an image of what one looks like.

You connect it to the chassis speaker pins (#17 in image above)

c) Using a Voltmeter, disconnect the PSU cable to the motherboard and perform a paperclip test to start the PSU and then check if all the voltages supplies from the PSU are there and that they are the correct value.

After 3 hours of trying everything there was to try I have finally found your answer. First thing you've suggested worked perfectly. Thank you.

Context: so I plugged in a vacuum cleaner in ups while PC was turned on, to see what would happen, to my surprise ups got overwhelmed and shut the PC down, simulating me pulling out power cord, I think. If that happens my Mobo ASRock z97 anniversary then refuses to boot the PC because reasons. Every time that happens I have to figure out a way to fix it. Should buy a new pc

Check the output rating (in Watts) that the UPS can handle. It may be that a vacuum cleaner needs too much. Most require 1500-2000W and your PC might need 500-700W. It's not the UPS fault that it can't handle both if it can't supply enough power to do so. ;-)

If it was resolved by removing/replacing the CMOS battery then check the battery voltage is >2.6V DC, if not replace it. Model number of battery should be printed on battery.

This battery maintains the BIOS settings when the PC is off. When it starts to get low then corruption can occur in BIOS (possible due to power interruptions/fluctuations/surges etc)which can cause weird things to happen on startup or even that it won't start.

Also suggest that you connect the PC via a surge protector to prevent actual damage from power surges etc.

Some power strips (powerboard) have them inbuilt or other you plug into the wall power outlet (UPS?) and then plug the PC power cord into it.
