Works fine when plugged in to power. When off the charger/player it shows no battery power, shuts down quickly, or only lasts several minutes before shutting down as if out of power, when it showed that is was fully charged.

steve oesterling, it sounds to me like your battery is at the end of its lifespan and not holding a charge. the batteries are relatively easy to change and not that expensive. iPod 5th Generation (Video) Battery Replacement and here is the battery http://www.ifixit.com/iPod-Parts/iPod-Vi... just make sure you get the one for your size iPod.
