Why wont my computer recognize new hard drive?

My ipod died a while back due to hard drive failure. I recently purchased a 30 Gb hard drive and installed it into my ipod according to the instructions on this wedsite. When I plug my ipod into my computer, I can hear the hard drive spinning up, but the computer does not recognize the hard drive.

How do I get my computer to recognize the hard drive so that I can reformat it and turn it into an ipod?

TIA

Joseph, there should not be any big steps involved with that. Once you change the drive you should just have to plug your iPod into the computer and iTunes will recognize it as a iPod needing to be restored. when you changed your HDD did you also change the HDD cable. Make sure that it is seated properly and that the clips are down to hold the cable in. Also verify that the HDD is working. You could try to place your iPod in disk mode and see if it shows up in your computer as a drive. Here is a great site that will help you with it. Good Luck
