set the iPod to disk mode prior to connecting it to iTunes. Hard reset the ipod and when the screen went blank, set it into disk mode, to do so pess the buttons given in this link.

Sometimes it takes more then one try to set the iPod into disk mode. When the iPod is in disk mode it will display "connect to iTunes" in some languages.

When the iPod says "connect to iTunes" do so, the iPod should be recognized and iTunes should find a "corrupted iPod" and will ask you to restore it.....done.

If it can not be restored or is not recognized, even when set to disk mode prior connecting, there seems to be something wrong with the hard drive. Check that the hard drive cable is set properly in its connectors ( hard drive / logic board), then try again.
