My microphone doesn't work on headphones, when plugged in my phone?

Help! I have this game that only works with headphones with a microphone. So I tried a variety of different earbuds and headphones and none of the microphones work on my phone. The microphone on my phone without headphones in is perfectly fine by itself, but doesn t work for the game. I am able to hear through both ears on most of the headphones and earphones I tried. I had been able to use the microphone on these earphones in the past. I've even used my brother's gaming headset that works for the PS4, and the mic still doesn't work but the sound goes through. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Does it maybe have anything to do with the water damage from when I dropped my phone in a pool?

Options

The pool situation could definitely cause problems and I doubt that the Mic is an exception. I'd try opening the device and checking for any water damage
