element tv wont stay on, cuts on and off & changes channels

powers off after changing channels several times back to back then cuts itself back on within 5-7 minutes to do this all over again.

Update (07/28/2018)

oldturkey03, attached is a pic of the iR board from the bottom of the TV. Very little on it! the ir sensor, a resistor and a LED to indicate "on" or "standby" (red or blue). Let me know what you think! Thanks.

@Monet Carter ,

Just verifying that you tried the following one at a time:

removing the batteries from the TV remote control unit and also any other remote control unit in the room e.g. Firestick remote etc

disconnecting the IR board in the TV from the mainboard

the TV control button board from the mainboard

and it is still happening?

@twistedslanky38 if it “cuts on and off & changes channels” you could be having issues with the IR board. If it cuts on and off after changing a channel it sounds more like a main board. Of course check also your remote to make sure it is not causing this. Remove the battery and see if the TV still behaves that way. Let us know the exact model of your TV so we can try and find out more information about this.

Thanks for the pictures. You got a multimeter and you think you get to the IR board to measure the 5V when it is connected etc.

Yes, have multimeter. Had a limited amount of time last night, seemed to be working OK if I only used the buttons on the tv to change channels for the first 15 minutes or so, but tried the remote, and after a few minutes it went crazy again. The power LED on the IR board turns blue when tv is turned on, and stays that way, like it is supposed to. I will test voltage and report back. Thanks.

I have tested it in it's working state, now waiting for it to go crazy, to check it then. Currently have 5.11v at the gnd, to the 5v and the IR pins. While I wait, I have been looking for used boards on ebay, and have found the following, the front of the board number TP.MS3393.PB851 seems to be a very common number across many Element, Wesitnghouse, etc models, larger and smaller screens. The rear sticker numbers and amount of info varies greatly, and mine does not match many if any of the currently available boards. Some boards have a P/N printed on a label, some have a ma rating such as mine (280), but many of them are 300, 320, 380, 520, etc. Also, the other numbers are all different, even if laid out in the same fashion. I did find one that had the same 280ma, and similar number layout, but different numbers. ebay item # 362303615989. Attached is a shot of the rear of my board stickers. I had to add pic in an answer, as I couldn't seem to ad it to a comment.

I'm working on this tv in a different location, hooked up to a cheap, flat, portable antenna, instead of the outdoor antenna. It has not went crazy yet. I will do some more investigating of the "bedroom" environment/situation.

by

More info: After more testing and observations: 5v going to IR board when tv works and when it does not. No other remotes in the room or area. TV goes crazy even if the IR board is unplugged from the main board. TV worked good this morning for about an hour before I had to leave. left it plugged into AC, later in the evening it would go crazy scanning channels and lowering the volume to minimum upon turning the tv on with the hard wired buttons, no other buttons pushed. Probably main board ??? How concerned do I need to be with the rear sticker numbers on the various replacement boards? Would a 50" board work in a 40" tv if the front board number of TP.MS3393.PB851 is the same? Anybody tried that? Just wondering.

Hi @twistedslanky38 ,

Just wondering if it was the TV button control board that has the problem.

Don't know your TV but are the TV control buttons on the side or the back near the side?

It may be that when you moved the TV to the different location you gripped the TV by the sides, putting pressure on the buttons which may have caused some inadvertent intermittent contact to be shifted.

If you didn't "touch" the buttons when moving the TV ignore this

Just a thought.

Here is a picture of the tiny circuit board with the button switches on the side of my unit that has developed corrosion or ??? that was conducting electricity between the soldered connections, causing multiple problems.

Removal of the board fixed the channel scanning, volume, and menu problems. I will clean the board off and re-install it at a later date.
