Scanner mechanism getting getting stuck, makes grinding noise

My Epson workforce pro scanning mechanism will not move and makes a noise like a gear is getting stripped. If I move it by hand ( open ink door) and move a metal box that moves along a rubber belt with teeth at back of printer I can move it forward. Then I turn on printer and the scanner bar moves to end of scanner glass, makes grinding noise and is stuck there. I get a printer " printer error Turnoff turn on again" message. No error number to guide me.
