Why isn't my Fuji Instax Mini Eight not turning on with batteries?

I've had my camera for 1 1/2 years and being the clumsy person I am, I've dropped my camera quite a lot of times. I barely use it, and the last time I used it was in summer (August) of 2017. Today though when I tried turning it on but it wouldn't turn on (same batteries since the summer, but they went bad to the extent where they had the white stuff). I took out the old batteries but there was one that was extremely hard to take off but I did it anyways. I put on some new ones I believe but when I tried turning it on, there was no reaction. I do not have any film inside the camera. So therefore I do not know what is wrong with it.
