How to fix the plastic clutch pedal assembly on a '02 Chevy 1500

This assembly is completely plastic & seems designed to fail. Badly engineered from GM. You can get a completely new from GM assembly for $60. but it's still all plastic & designed poorly. Wondering if anyone has come up w/ a more lasting fix or modification to improve on design.
