Blue Light turns on and charges (orange) but screens don't turn on/boot

Hi there.

I had recently bought a N3DSXL 2015 with broken (rage damage) touch screen. (And visible trauma damage around the casing)

Initially it was not booting until i replaced it.

Next I saw that the charge port needed repairing (missing pin).

I had removed and replaced the charge port.

Now my 3DS won't turn on or boot other than a non pulsing blue light and non lit black screens.

Is it possible that I fried something while removing the charge port?

The system can still charge (orange light).

The wifi cable looks abit kinked. Would a shoddy wifi card cable cause a N3DSXL 2015 from booting?

I'm thinking that maybe the screen/hinge flex cable may be broken even though I see no visible damage.

I have removed the SD card etc and tried to go into recovery mode which it won't.

Can anyone advise me on where to go from here?

Hi!

You said you had to remove the charging port? As you said, perhaps you fried something else with the soldering iron while at it, though if you were really careful chances are you did not.

I would take a closer look at the top screen ribbon and at the motherboard. Is there no way you can test the upper half of the console with the lower half of another one? Because if the top screen turns out to be fully functional you should replace the motherboard, as you may still have fried something while repairing it.

Hi Alex, at this point in time I have no other spare parts to test the console with other than my daily 3DS which is too much of a hassle to take apart for potentially nothing.

While removing the charge port I may of touched the microfuse next to it.

Would damaging the fuse next to the charge port give me these sort of symptoms?

I guess at this point ill have to reconnect everything for the third time and hope it's a loose connection.

Yes, these dudes on Nintendo handhelds are a pain. I remember back in the day how annoying it was to replace them on DS Lites...

Symptoms would be the same as yours: LEDs in, no power.

I managed to get a hold of a multi meter today. The tiny fuse next to the charge port has continuity.

I'm now suspecting it might be a faulty d-pad as the ribbon cable has a strike through it on the contacts.

Will keep this post updated. I may have to go through every little thing with a multi meter in the end.

Could you update the post with a picture of the strike-trough you mentioned? I'm curious to see if it's bad enough to cause this behaviour...

Never mind, finally came back from holidays, got a new d-pad, although one for an older 3ds ( i cut the corner of the pcb to fit), Slotted it in and still doesn't boot up.

It's kind of sad, i got it really dirt cheap, had it working and now can't diagnose why it won't boot after I soldered the new battery charge port. :(.

Can you check if there is a short on the charging port, maybe a bit of solder joining one or more of the pins together?
