I use facetime to talk to one of my sisters. One day no problem with her hearing me but the next time we tried facetime she couldn't hear me at all. I then checked memo -got ver,very faint sound but just static when I tried to do a video with the camera. I'm not technically inclined but see no settings for the microphone

The microphone "hole" is on the back of the housing, next to the rear camera. It could be plugged up with dirt/lint, attenuating the sound that gets through. You could try cleaning it with a cotton swab and IPA or even "picking" at it with something pointy. Just be careful not to stick anything inside too deeply.
