Why won't unit sync after replacement of hard drive and logic boar

I had the red x problem so I replaced hard drive. Unit was not recognized by iTunes so I thought the logic board was bad. I replaced it soon after. The iPod won't sync. It tries to open iTunes but nothing happens. Now what do I do?
