iPod Won't draw power via Firewire

I have an old (2nd or 3rd gen) iPod 15GB. 30 pin connector, firewire plug. It's one of the old iPods with an actual hard drive for storage.

I really want to get all my music off this device, but using a 30 pin connector either via USB or Firewire isn't drawing enough power.

If I have the iPod plugged in to a wall outlet, via a USB or Firewire cable, it draws power, says it's charging, and is fully functional.

But connected to a laptop with a Firewire expansion slot card, it's not pulling enough power. I suspect the battery has been bad for many years now.

Any suggestions on how I can get it to draw enough power while connected to my laptop so I can pull all my music off?
