My screen is flickering and won't charge or turn on

My tablet is dead and I can't get it to charge. When I plug it in to the charger the battery charging indicator appears and then the screen flickers and goes off and then a couple seconds later the battery charging indicator appears again and then flickers and goes off. It does this over and over as long as I have the charger plugged in but it never charges at all. Then when I try to power it on the Samsung logo appears on the screen and then before it can get a chance to go to the next screen it flickers on and off a couple times and then finally goes black. I have no idea what the problem is so I'm hoping someone else knows or has been through this before.
