model 247.203744, new but blades wont engage
brand new, never used, craftsman rider. Runs good, but dies when blades are engaged.

Sounds like what happens when you try to put it in reverse with the blades engaged (without first overriding it with the key position and button pressed). Are you sure it's not in reverse? Otherwise it may be a bad switch or sensor that is causing it to "think" it's in reverse. Just a thought.
