I have to plug the iPod first into electricity, then it will work without being plugged in. the battery drains quickly. the wake button does not work without electricity.

Do you think i still need new battery

I have similar problem. If my IPod is off for awhile, I need to plug it in for a few minutes before it starts up. The battery shows it's fully charged. It works fine even if I turn it off and on again. It's when it has been off for awhile that it "blacks" out.

mfrench1 sounds like you possibly have a bad battery. I would replace it once more. Even if your iPod is not charging or syncing due to a bad dock connector, it should at least still come on for a short while with the new battery.

This happened to my water damaged iPod. There was corrosion all over it so I opened it up and replaced the battery (this is a must not an option). then I soaked it in isopropyl alcohol for 15 minutes and scrubbed with a toothbrush. It works great now!
