What is the best way to clean this system?

I am interested in upgrading my HP laptop and I wanted to know the best course of action to take updating the software/cleaning out the drives. I know I have to open her up and clean out the fan as well as upgrade the hard drive. I should probably update the os as well. I have already backed everything up on my external hard drive.

Sonia, if you are going to replace the hard drive, then do not worry about cleaning the old one. Once you have a new drive, you will need to reinstall your OS or replace your OS with a newer version. For the hardware replacement and cleaning the fans etc. download the service manual from here. It will show you how to get to every part.
