I think you have two different problems:

First you appeared to have taken the display apart without checking the rest of the system or taking it the assembly off to work on it. You should follow this IFIXIT guide on taking the display off. These displays are not easy to put back together without making marks or leaving dust on the diffuser sheets. I don't even try to take them apart as there just to difficult to work on.

At this point I think you need a new display assembly just to make the real issue easier to fix as I also think you may have damaged things here to the point of no return. Follow this IFIXIT guide: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2011 Display Assembly Replacement and here is the replacement part: MacBook Air 11" (Mid 2011) Display Assembly - Apple P/N: 661-6069. You should be able to find one used as well.

Now I suspect the real issue here is a burn't WLED driver which is a chip on the logic board. Which is why the backlight is not powering up fully. Its also possible you have liquid damage causing a short. the source of the smoke.

At this point you'll need to make a full inspection of the logic board before you power anything up as you could end up damaging the new display! Follow this IFIXIT guide on taking the logic board out so you can inspect both sides: MacBook Air 11" Mid 2011 Logic Board Replacement.

If you see anything different comparing your system to the IFIXIT pictures like a burnt area, corrosion or spillage take a good picture and post it in your question so we can see as well and guide you to the next steps.
