Broken screen, how to remove, is it functionnal?

Hi,

I have a 2009 Macbook Pro with a broken screen. It is now plugged to an external screen. can I simply remove the LCD and work only on the external screen or would this potentially harm the computer ?

I think you'll be OK here if you remove the LCD panel its self alone.

You will loose the WiFi & Bluetooth as well as the SameTime camera & microphone if you remove the complete lid. So you're more likely going to pull the LCD. So when you look at it that way you're more than 1/2 way there replacing it.

Given the cost and the value of the system I would put the new display in MacBook Pro 17" Unibody (Early 2011) Display Assembly - Apple P/N's: 661-5963 (gloss) 661-5964 (matte). The 17" models are highly sought even the older ones!

Here's the IFIXIT guide: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Display Replacement if you replace the complete lid assembly, or this one: MacBook Pro 17" Unibody Front Display Glass Replacement which will get you to the LCD panel. If you can swing it get the complete assembly as its much easier a repair.
