It sounds like you had a legitimate hardware failure with this device.

To test further I would try the following:

1.) Plug the device into a different USB ports on the computer to ensure the computers USB ports are working properly and eliminate that as a factor.

2.) Plug the device into a USB wall charger to see if the screen shows anything.

3.) Try at your own risk. I have tried and had about 10% success withthis, place the device in the freezer for about 20 minutes. This shrinks the metal/glass case and puts a little extra pressure on any connections that could be loose. I have done this with iPhone but not iPod, the principle is the same though so it should apply.

If this does not stimulate a reaction from the device we must assume hardware failure (I know it sucks but it happens). Unfortunately there are no tools that apple makes available to the public to diagnose these issue but any apple store or authorized dealer should diagnose for free and recommend a repair method.

Not everything can be fixed at home unfortunately.

Hope this helps.

I had a similar problem. What I did was left the Ipod for a good few days (I assume to let it fully drain out of battery? Not sure) and then plugged it in and it started charging. It worked for me, hopefully for you to. Good luck.
