Constant recovery mode, will not move past that screen

I had my ipod classic on earlier, everything fine except then I noticed a small symbol in the battery bar like it was plugged in except that it wasn't. Then the screen kept lighting up and started saying connect to power. Now, it just shows a checkmark and says ok to disconnect. Plugged into the computer it has gone through reset four times and will not start. I live and die with this, it's my constant companion. Can I do anything to bring it back to life?
