start button, machine doesn't engage just clicks

Since installation,(11/2007),door has to be lifted up to line up.Door has more play than usual as do the control buttons.

3 loads ago machine stopped 18 min into cycle. Machine was flashing fdl and beeping. Door unlocked after engaging then canceling custom cycle. I divided the load thinking it was too heavy and finished doing laundry.

Next load, machine makes a patterned clicking sound but will not engage. If you hold the start button the machine flashes fdl and beeps till you hit pause/cancel.

could this be from the play in the door?
