Won't charge past "Charging please wait..." screen

Recently when I plug my ipod into my computer to charge it is stuck on the "Charging please wait..." screen where it displays a battery, sometimes it will show the start up screen, displaying the apple logo but then shuts off... rinse and repeat. My initial thought was maybe the battery has reached it's lifespan, but before spending money on a replacement I thought I would check here to see if there are any other opinions.
