Why wasn't HDMI recognized

PlayStation is usually hooked up to TV with HDMI cable.Usually when it's plugged in the PlayStation screen appears. When we turned it on the other day the screen just stayed black. We tried new HDMI cable as well as all of the HDMI ports on our TV. Any ideas on how to fix this or is it time to retire it and get a new one (hubby would like this option best! LOL)
