The sound on my iPod will not work( Yes, I've checked volume)

Can not get sound to work on any app or music. I've checked volume and other settings. There seems to be a very muffled sound coming from the speaker. It is less than a year old is up to date and has been in a protective case since purchased. It has not received any damage or gotten wet.
