My iPod doesn't switches on

Hello,

I got a 40 gb iPod from my sister

But the iPod doesn't starts, it's even not detected in iTunes

Is it a dead battery ?

Hi, there are several possibilities. I once had this same device, and had this exact same problem. If it's the battery, then this is very easy to fix. It'l be a little more difficult if the problem is the logic board. Ifixit has guides on replacing both of these things. Unfortunately, there is no way to tell what exactley the problem is. Apple stopped supporting this device many years ago :-(. However, chances are, it's the battery. But just to check, try a different cable, and computer.
