Defective battery or logic board?

Hi there,

I have an iPod video 5th gen 60gb that I got wet a few years back breaking it.

When plugged into power or my mac the ipod would light up with a white flickering screen and make a high pitched buzzing sound. The computer would not recognise it when plugged in either.

Last week I decided I wanted the challenge to fix this thing. I actually took it into an apple store and the guy at the genius bar thought it could just be a dead battery hence the flickering and why it only lights up when plugged in.

I subsequently bought a replacement battery on ebay. After swapping it out my ipod, it came to life which was amazing after so long. About half an hour later it started playing up though and the hold switch became stuck on, making the ipod useless. After some playing around and searching the questions on here I decided it could be another faulty part and I have ordered a new headphone jack and hold switch of ebay to swap out.

This morning though my ipod has gone back to being a total brick again and the battery seems to be dead, when plugged in it is doing the same as it originally did with the white flickering screen, high pitched buzzing and some clicking. This is with the new battery in.

Its so frustrating as I had the ipod back working for a short period of time with the new battery and now its a brick again.

My main question is though, could the battery I bought on ebay be defective or is this all down to the logic board being damaged?

Hugo, start with another new battery and when you change it, check the logic board at the battery connector. Remember that this particular model has issues with the battery connector. It has the tendency to get loose and sometimes even break of the board. Check on that...

That's hard to tell you which part is defective. Mabe the batery owned on ebay was and endamaged your logic board. You can own them both on iFixit (you'll have no probleme with these ones) and follow the iPod video step-by-step guides to replace it.

Hope i helped you a bit !

You're welcome ! Don't forget to own an official cable. I know that it's expensive but it may be needed in your case :)
