Runs slow, won't charge battery

This Compaq Presario 2570us runs slow and since the battery was original I had a new one installed. It won't charge either.

Is there a way to see if I have a defective battery?

Is this the reason it runs slow or is that a separate problem?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

most likely different issues. What exactly do you mean by running slow? What happens from the time you start it up?

by

It takes a longer time to load than it used to and some programs take MUCH longer than before.

Two techs have looked at this laptop. Neither could solve the problem. The battery is new (defective?).

mlbne, I would suggest that you try to defrag your drive, clean up your cache and temp file folders. This definitely sounds like a software issue. Also, check which programs are being loaded in the background. The not charging of the battery could be caused by a bad battery or a bad chearging circuit. I'd replace the battery first and see what it does. Hope this helps, good luck.

Did you check your DC in board/port? what did the techs check? Charging circuit, DC board? the more details we have the more concise we can answer.

That I was not told.

It will power up and run, but some programs will not ever start up and run. The power indicator shows it is running on AC, but the battery never gets charged.

Deleted AVG last night and gave up waiting after an hour or more. By this morning it finally had completed. Task Manager will come up in half a minute.

Installed System Mechanic Pro which deleted an older version, but it gives the error message 'The selected procedure could not be found'. Have a tech request in to see what they say.

The hard drive is only 45% full and doesn't need to be de-fraged.

Have you checked for malware? what programs are loading and running in the background? The amount of data that is currently stored on the hard drive is irrelevant in regard to the defragmentation. Computer files are not stored in a "linear" fashion, but the OS will put different pieces of a file, to wherever there is space available. This could cause a single file to be broken up into hundreds of pieces, all in different locations. This in turn can cause data files to become corrupted etc. Most defrag utilities analyze a hard drive first and report the amount of fragmentation. I use 30% of fragmentation (not storage) as a threshold to defrag the drive.

First off I'd like to say thank you for your persistence and patients. As you can tell I'm only moderately proficient.

I am slowed up by what will run and what will not. IOLO had one suggestion for System Mechanic that was a no go. So waiting for the next suggestion.

Ad-Aware SE found 3 items and I've downloaded a version that is scanning now.

PC-Optimize latest version will not run at all.

CCleaner eliminated a fair number of files, etc.

If you have a suggestion of something else to run, let me know.
