From the details I can only assume that:

Problem may be due to corrupt preference files. Another reasons could also be some problem with the drive itself. Are you able to boot in safe mode?

To begin safe mode hold Shift key as you startup. It will do a disk checkup. Go on to Utilities<<Disk Utility and from First Aid tab select the hard drive and run 'Verify Disk' to diagnose errors (if any). If errors are found by Disk Utility then run repair to fix those errors.

Do you have OS X install disk with you? If you have then insert the disk as soon you hear the startup tone. If the Mac hangs again then don't panic start next time and hold down C key as you hear the start tone. Make sute to keep the hold on C key until you recieves progrees indicator. Follow the commands on screen until unless the menu bar appears with the Utilities menu in it. Open Disk utilities and try to verify and repair functions again.

This might help you start your Macbook.
