Calling SMPS gurus to help

Block Image

I am attempting to repair the power supply of my air fryer. It comes on for a moment and then dies. I have traced the circuit (hopefully correct!). I have checked all the diodes, capacitors and resistors. I have not been able to find out the identity of the 8-pin controller. It looks a bit like the Viper12A but the pins do not match. Can anyone identify it please? Greetings from Western Australia, William

It is impossible to see the markings on the IC with the naked eye. I have taken a photograph of the IC through my microscope and applied filters to get the best image. It appears to have two sets of numbers - PN6013 and L43A2A12. How does one distinguish between the part number and the production number?

I would be gratefulif anyone can shed some light on this - I need to know what type of controller IC it is.

Update (05/30/24)

Hello again SMPS Gurus! I have now replaced the PN6013 after replacing all the low ESR electrolytics but still the problem persists!

The voltage across the 4.7mfd capacitor on the high voltage section is stable at 340v (Our mains is 240v)

Upon switch-on the 5v secondary output across the 1000mfd capacitor on the low voltage section reads 5v for a second and then drops off towards zero. A few seconds later it comes back for a second and then drops off to zero, this then repeats.

The sawtooth waveform at the SW connection of the PN6013 does the same thing, goes to full swing and then dies down repeatedly. The voltage across the 220mfd does the same thing, rises to a steady level and then dies down repeatedly.

Any jewels of wisdom?

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Hi @madaboutears

What's the frequency of the 5V output?

To me you are describing a "pulsing" 5V AC output or if you like if the frequency is high enough it is effectively a 5V DC output with a small ripple - bad example maybe but see first waveform diagrams in link

Is this the voltage that is required on the output?

Hi jayeff, thanks for your interest.

The whole purpose of this simple little power supply is to deliver 5v 300mA DC from 90 to 240v AC mains. Just like other USB power-source-from-the-mains units. It does that at the moment but only in short bursts about 45 times a minute. A very weird fault.

@madaboutears

I think that you would need to increase the frequency by altering the IC on/off timing.

At the moment the output is about .75Hz i.e. 60 seconds ÷ 45 so not exactly replicating DC. Usually smps frequency is in the KHz range but it may depend on the design of the circuit and the IC being used

Without seeing the datasheet for the IC I would imagine that the on/off timing would be determined by the 22K Ohm / 1.5 Ohm resistor divider network and the 4.3K ohm resistor + capacitor across the input side.

Hi @madaboutears

Don't know what type of IC it is. When searching for the p/n all I get is links to datasheets for engines.

However I did find a supplier of the IC.

If you check the image in the link the part has the same information on it as the one you have. Shipping costs far outweigh the cost of the part however.

I found it by searching for PN6013 L43A2A12 and it showed up in the image results at the top of the page.

You may have better luck searching for other suppliers.

You may get a good answer on Reddit but if you don't I would check with Digikey.com or Mouser.com. Use whatever little data is here to see if you can find an equivalent. Digikey has a good forum that deals a lot with identifying and cross-referencing components.

If you are creative and don't mind changing some of the circuitry, you could try a DK910 (same package, different pinout) or you can again use the data from that and check with the before mentioned places and hunt for an equivalent.

Thanks again, I have all the data now! Will hunt around to see if I can buy some PN6013s. Will let you know.

@madaboutears great. Let us know how you are making out with it. If you can't find the PN6013 it is okay sot substitute with equivalent components

by

@ruggb "Sorry, this item is no longer available!"

I have just ordered 10 x PN6013 fron a seller on eBay. Should arrive in Western Australia by the middle of next month. Will follow up once I have received and tried. Thank you all for your help and encoragement! William
