First Steps
Before taking the time to try the more extreme solutions detailed below, try some of the more basic steps below.
- Power-cycle your device: This option closes down any problematic program or session that may be causing the issue. You might need to disable Restart apps under Sign in options to prevent the app from reopening once you are finished power cycled.
- Update your Keyboard drivers: If your Function keys are not working, check if your keyboard drivers need to be updated. Oftentimes manually updating your drives can resolve an issue occurring with your keyboard.
Causes
Oftentimes, your device's software can negatively affect how your keyboard functions. This is often the case when your device uses outdated or corrupted drivers. Consider the following before dismantling your device.
Incorrect Keyboard Layout
Ensure that your keyboard layout matches what is shown in the operating system. If you are running Windows 10 or 11, you can use the steps below to open the on-screen keyboard.
- Press the Windows key + R
- Type OSK and press Enter
If the onscreen keyboard does not match the physical keyboard, follow the steps below.
Changing your keyboard's layout Windows 10
- From the desktop, go to the Start Menu, choose Settings, and then choose Time & Language.
- Click the Language option option from the left pane and choose Add a language.
- Browse for your preferred language, and click on the language to add it to the Language List.
- Choose the language from the Language List, and set it as the default language.
Changing your keyboard's layout Windows 11
- From the desktop, go to the Start Menu, choose Settings, and then choose Time & Language.
- Click the Add a Language button.
- Browse for your preferred language, and click on the language to add it to the Language List.
- Choose the language from the Language List and set it as the default.
