Identification and Background ¶ 

The first iPad model was announced in January 2010 and was released April 3 of the same year. The device resembled a large iPod Touch, sporting a 9.7" LED-backlit display, and featuring multi-touch capabilities. The first models launched connected to the internet solely via a Wi-Fi connection, but a second model released on April 30 2010 featured the ability to connect to a 3G network with a monthly subscription through a wireless provider. Like the iPod Touch and iPhone that came before it, the iPad used Apple's iOS operating system and ran iPhone apps.

The iPad Wi-Fi and iPad 3G are easily distinguished from each other by features on their outer cases. The 3G model features a black bar across the top of the rear case for the 3G antenna, as well as a MicroSIM slot.
