No service even with no sim card

I have an iPhone 4s that says no service even with no sim card installed. I´ve restored/updated to iOS 5.1.1 from dfu mode and the problem persists. iTunes says "there is no sim card installed to activate the iPhone.." etc, but the iPhone is activated, and I repeat there is no sim in it!

Any idea?

Sorry for my ignorance, the iPhone is GSM/CDMA version that's why it says "no service" even with no SIM card. I didn't know that the new iPhone 4s has both technologies. I figured it was like the iphone 4, a version for each.
