Get the vehicle's OBDII port scanned for any DTC codes (diagnostic troubleshooting codes).

If there are any stored, they will tell you what the problem is.

If you're in the USA larger retail auto parts stores e.g. AutoZone etc will do this for free

If there is a transmission problem it goes into LIMP mode.

The full terminology is LIMP HOME mode, so you can do exactly that.

Is is normally 2nd gear in a 4 speed.

No it isn't that because it drives perfectly fine sometimes even for days in a row. Any other idea what it is,?
